Situation Source record

Prototype research and development on red ginseng using a Venlo type glass greenhouse with a three deck vertical system.

Challenge

Prove that a high value, slow growing crop could be produced in a controlled vertical system before anyone committed to production scale.

What JYCO examined

Light, temperature and humidity for a crop with its own requirements, and the three deck arrangement, which made vertical utilisation a variable in its own right.

Issues identified

The distance between a prototype that works and a system that repeats. Light, temperature and humidity could be held for one cycle; the question was the procedure, the schedule and the staff that would hold them for every cycle. Variables in play: light, temperature, humidity, land and spacing, crop, growing medium.

Approach

Separate the prototype from the deployment. The gap between a working three deck system and a repeatable one is the operating procedure, the crop schedule and the staff who run it.

If the situation is complex, the first step is usually a conversation.
